Thommankuthu is only 18 kms from Thodupuzha, one of the major regional towns. The seven stepped waterfall is a major attraction of the region.There are also small cascades and rapids that certainly contribute to the look and feel.Multiple waterfalls means multiple pools.

Its also possible to take a dip in the waterfalls. There are many safe spots all around the waterfalls. But make sure it’s safe before you dive in.

Most of the cities and tourist locations in Kerala are well connected by roads, and are usually well maintained.  Kerala has stricter laws when compared to other Indian states regarding speed limits, helmets, seatbelts, etc.  You should also look out for the occasional speed cameras usually on highways.

Kerala is a paradise for every passionate driver. To absorb everything Kerala has to offer,it’s only possible from a motorcycle. It will give you the complete Kerala experience. And you can meet a lot of fellow riders on the road. It will give you the freedom of pacing the trip and changing plans to fit your schedule. It’s also the most reliable form of transportation considering that the public transport is rarely on time.


Things to Remember:

  1. In India we ride on the left side of the road unlike the United states and most of Europe.

  2. Helmet and seat belts are important.

  3. Road traffic is rarely followed by pedestrians, cyclists , trucks, busses and auto-rickshaws. Keep distance from them and anticipate for the worst situation.

  4. Keep the speed down, speeding through the congested roads may not be a good idea, especially considering you need reaction time for actions of other drivers.


Main traffic violations to watch out for:

  1. Helmet/Seat belt: Can attract a fine of up to ₹500.

  2. Drunk driving: Cops are always on the watch for drunk drivers, They have alcometers. Fine of ₹1000 and possible arrest.

  3. Speeding: Beware of cops with speed radar on national highways and speed cameras too. Fines up to ₹300.

Driving under the influence of Alcohol/Narcotics is a strict no-no. It is not only dangerous for the driver, but heavily penalised if caught by the police. The speed limit on most roads for motorcycles is 60km/h which is plenty considering the road conditions, and on 4 lane roads upto 70km/h. Cars can go upto 85km/h on highways. As a tourist you should expect to cover a maximum of 150-300km per day.

All these things don't matter when it comes to the astonishing natural beauty of Kerala. The ride through these places can be a little challenging, but the views and the feel will change your perspective of life. Best season to visit?

Many people have asked me the same question, What is the best time to visit Kerala. And I would say any time.

The climate of Kerala is almost same throughout the year, except for Monsoon ( Raining season ) during June-Aug. But that season is known for rain tourism, a lot of activities you can do during the raining season is organized during this time of the year. Nov-Feb is peak tourist season, its a lot cooler than other months, but it never gets too cold unless you visit the hill stations. All other months are okay, hotels will be cheaper because of the non-tourist season. But generally avoid April-May. It gets hot.


What to pack for Kerala?


  1. DEET: To prevent mosquito bites

  2. Warm weather clothes, not too many winter Jackets

  3. Flip flops for the beach.

  4. International Driving Licence if you plan to drive in Kerala.

  5. Sunscreen

  6. Umbrella ( or you can buy them cheaper in Kerala )

Currency

INR is the preferred choice, but some places do accept currencies such as USD, GBP and EUR, but they may charge a premium.

Alleppey also known as Alappuzha or the venice of the east. The whole city of Alleppey is covered in a network of waterways and much like Venice, there are a lot of boats that are used to navigate them. The local traditional boats are called “vallams”, and the one for tourist are either Shikara's or houseboats.


Alleppey is also known for its vast beaches and backwaters. This makes Alleppey one of the most famous tourist locations in India. The golden beaches in and around Alleppey are one of the best in the world. Marari, Alleppey and Thrikkunnapuzha are famous for its beautiful beaches and the backwaters nearby to them. Kumarakom in Kottayam district is also an interesting place which is nearby to Alleppey.

What makes Alleppey unique is that the land is just a couple of centimetres above the water level, this makes the sights more attractive when travelling through the waters. The sight of coconut trees leaning towards the water on the narrow coastline of these backwaters and the local people going about their daily chores. In most places, people use cars or motorcycles for daily transportation, but in Alleppey people use boats to get around the place. The waterways are part of their life and they are completely dependant on it.

Alleppey is also known for its Ayurvedic tourism. Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medicinal method which is completely natural and developed over centuries. And Alleppey is a centre of many Ayurvedic hospitals and resorts which offer Ayurvedic rejuvenation facilities.

How to reach Alleppey?

The nearest Airport is Cochin International Airport, from Kochi you can easily rent a motorcycle and start your journey towards Alleppey. It is around 65 kms from Kochi and will take you around 2 hours. And also this gives you the freedom to explore places like Marari beach and Pathiramanal Island which is on the way to Alleppey from Kochi.

Another option is to take a train from Kochi ( Ernakulam ) and get down at Alleppey. You can also choose to drive to Munnar and reach Alleppey from there.

It is one of the best beaches in Kerala, and the only one which is adjacent to a cliff. The evening sunset views from the cliff is just breathtaking. Varkala beach was until recently overshadowed by Kovalam beach which is around 50 kms away. But now more and more people are coming to Varkala to enjoy the beautiful atmosphere here.

The cliff top is the best part about Varkala, there is a 1km walk that goes over the cliff top overlooking the beach. Because of the height advantage the views from the path are just amazing. And there are winding steps to beach along the path. And one more amazing thing about this place is the sheer number of restaurants and cafes here. Even if you spend a month here, you can’t try them all. The kind of cuisine offered by these cafes also vary, so you can try something new every time. It is a really nice place to relax and enjoy a good book.

The beach is perfect for swimming and surfing. The beaches are clean and shallow for a long distances in many places. The waves are strong and hence suitable for surfing and kayaking. JetSkis are also available on demand.

Varkala is more like a relaxing vacation rather than an adventurous one. Varkala will help you to start a good adventurous vacation in India with a relaxed atmosphere or a good way to finish your long and tiring vacation in India. How to reach Varkala?

The ride to Varkala from Kochi is around 180kms, it is a good long drive. But it is advisable to stop over at Alappuzha (Alleppey) and then proceed to Varkala the next day. Another advantage of riding to Varkala is the freedom you will get to explore the area. Additionally you can save the energy spent on negotiating with any rickshaws (tuk tuk) drivers. It is easy to rent a motorcycle from Kochi, and its very affordable as it is exciting.

Anjengo Fort: Anjengo Fort is a fort near varkala. It is a place of historic importance as well as beautiful natural setting, Anjengo is an ideal destination for those who don't mind walking around and explore what is in store. The historic significance tagged to Anjengo comes through foreign powers like the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally the English East India Company.
Varkala Tunnel : Varkala Tunnel is a popular tourist highlight. It was a 924 ft long tunnel built in 1867 by Sir T. Madhava Rao the dewan of Travancore, and took 14 years to complete. Varkala Lighthouse is another tourist highlight in the vicinity.

The Thamarassery Ghat pass is a must drive pass for any motorcycle enthusiast because of the tricky hairpins and deep valleys. The view on this road will surely take your breath away.

Wayanad is one of the only remaining place in Kerala which remains pristine and untouched by any external force. The mountains, rivers and never ending forests make it a paradise for any visitor. Eve during monsoon season (raining season June-Aug) Wayanad is a popular destination for tourists. Adventure sports like river rafting, mountain climbing, trekking and paragliding are common in Wayanad.


How to reach Wayanad?

The nearest Airport to Wayanad is Kozhikode (Calicut) international airport at a distance of about 100 km from Kalpetta (Wayanad dist HQ).

But the most popular way is riding down from Kochi (Cochin), this is good 5hr trip. Its is around 250kms from Kochi.

Other options include rail and busses, but it does not give you the freedom of absorbing the scenic route to Wayanad.


Where to stay?

Wayanad has lots of resorts and homestays all over the place.Make sure to research some hotels online before you take the trip. The most accessible place to stay is Kalpetta, the district HQ. You can easily access any places in Wayanad easily from here or on the way to Kalpetta.

Expect to pay around $15- 25 per day for a good place.

Resorts can be expensive but the included features for them are definitely worth every buck.


Climate?

Wayanad is mostly around the year cool. It is good to carry a jacket or a hoodie. Umbrella is a must because rains can be a little unpredictable. It is a good escape from the heat of Kerala during summer.

Lakkidi Viewpoint
Lakkidi is located at the crest of Thamarassery Ghat Pass, which features over 9 hairpin curves that start at Adivaram (downhill). This town is situated at a height of about 2,296 feet above the main sea level.It is further 5km away from the nearby town of Vythiri that has steep mountains and dense forests. Lakkidi View Point offers beautiful views of the cliffs and valleys surrounding the region.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the famous wildlife reserves in the district of Wayanad. It is famous for its night camping and a watchtower, which is located above the lake. This lake is also the main source of water for the wild animals inhabiting the sanctuary. The sanctuary is part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and is situated about 15 km north of Mananthavady.

Soochipara Waterfalls

The Soochipara Waterfalls,famously called Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, is located near the town of Meppadi. Surrounded by huge hills and dense forests, it falls from a height of 100 feet to 300 feet. There is a pool below this waterfall, which is suitable for bathing, river rafting and swimming.

There are few tree top huts located near the Western Ghats Valley, adding to the beauty of this waterfall. Soochipara Waterfalls is situated at a distance of 22 km from Kalpetta and is known for rock climbing and nature walks. Nature walks are the best way to explore the destination and see deer and other wild animals near the waterfalls.

Edakkal Caves

The Edakkal Caves feature a crevice of around 96 feet in length, 30 feet in depth and 22 feet in width. There is a fissure at this site that was created due to splitting of a rock. This fissure and rock walls feature carvings of animal and human figures of the prehistoric period.


The caves are located around 25 km from Kalpetta and about 3 km from Ambalavayal. The trekking trail to these ancient caves from Edakkal extends around 1 km. These caves can be best visited in the morning and can be easily reached from Sulthan Bathery, which is around 16 km away.Trekking is possible through Ambukuthi Hills to travel to these Edakkal Caves.There is a telescope near these caves that are used for seeing the surrounding valley.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, situated between Muthanga and Tholpetty, is popularly known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in the state which covers an extensive area of about 344.44 sq km and is close to the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in the state of Karnataka.
Activities to do: Trekking, jeep trip inside.

Kuruva Island

Kuruva Island is also popularly known as Kuruva Dweep, which lies on the banks of the tributaries of River Kabini. This island is a famous picnic hot spot. It is around 17 km from Mananthavady,inhabited by rare bird species, herbal plants and orchids. This island covers a large area of around 950 acres of evergreen forest.

It is also famous for its bamboo canopy which provides a glimpse into the natural treasure of the confluence of the rivulets. This island is close to the Begur Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to varied wild animals and birds. Boating facilities are available.

Pookot Lake

Pookot Lake is situated amidst a beautiful forest in the wooded hills of the Wayanad region. It is a freshwater lake which is considered to be an ideal picnic spot. Tourists can engage in boating at this lake, however, swimming is prohibited at this site.A  freshwater aquarium and a spices and handicrafts emporium is also located here. You can see the traditional handicraft works of local communities here.

This lake covers an area of around 8.5 hectares, with a maximum water depth of over 6.5 metres. It lies 3 km south of the main town of Vythiri and is known for its pleasant and cool weather. Can be easily accessed on the way to Kalppetta if your driving on the road.The shops located near this lake offer various types of bamboo and wood artefacts along with tea, spices and coffee.

Other places to visit from Wayanad

Mysore, Masinagudi, Bandipur reserve etc are close to Wayanad. The Nilgiris and Coorg districts are also good places to visit.
The forest road is only open during the day, it closes during the night time. You can see a lot of animals on this road, especially during evening and early morning.

Because of the central location of Kochi, most of the places are accessible from Kochi. But in Fort Kochi some must see spots are.

Mattancherry Palace: Also known as the Dutch palace, its a fusion of European architecture styles with the Kerala nalukettu style.

Jew Town and Paradesi Synagogue: the synagogue has some beautiful artwork and is looked after by the tiny Jewish community that remains in Cochin

Hill Palace: Hill palace museum in Tripunithura is well worth a visit. Filled with exhibits from around Kochi. Especially some amazing horse drawn carriages.

Marine Drive: Perfect for an evening walk. Just minutes on a ferry from Fort Kochi/ Mattancherry.

Chinese Fishing nets: A sight to see, especially during the sunset. Found around the city, especially near Fort Kochi.

Wonderla Water park: One of the best water themed amusement park in India. Over 40 rides, suitable for all ages. Rate around $10.

Evening Boat rides: Easily available from Marine drive, spend a fun night out at the sea.

Bolgatty Palace, Wellington Island,  are other attractions.

Many people have asked me the same question, What is the best time to visit Kerala. And I would say any time.

The climate of Kerala is almost same throughout the year, except for Monsoon ( Raining season ) during June-Aug. But that season is known for rain tourism, a lot of activities you can do during the raining season is organized during this time of the year. Nov-Feb is peak tourist season, its a lot cooler than other months, but it never gets too cold unless you visit the hill stations. All other months are okay, hotels will be cheaper because of the non-tourist season. But generally avoid April-May. It gets hot.


What to pack for Kerala?

  2. Warm weather clothes, not too many winter Jackets
  3. Flip flops for the beach.
  4. nternational Driving Licence if you plan to drive in Kerala.

INR is the preferred choice, but some places do accept currencies such as USD, GBP and EUR, but they may charge a premium.

Travelling
Kerala has 3 Airports. Main Airport is in Cochin (Kochi). From most places you can easily get a connecting flight via Dubai, or Singapore.Emirates, Air India, Singapore Airlines, AirAsia, British Airways have daily flights to Kochi.

Most of the tourists arrive in Kochi because it is well connected to international locations. And Kochi is the hub of Kerala. From Kochi you can go to anywhere in Kerala, because of the central location.

Kerala is well connected by roads, railways and sometimes waterways.
Renting a car: Can be done, but too much traffic on the road. Parking can be very difficult.

Renting a motorcycle: Easy and fast transport. Will give you the best visual of Kerala.

Railways: Cheap and fast. But can be very crowded and a little icky.

Buses: Same as railway.

Waterways: Very cheap, but not well connected.

Taxi: Fast and very clean. Might be a little expensive.

What to expect in Kerala?
